Joel van Houdt (b. 1981, the Netherlands) is an independent photojournalist based in Kabul, Afghanistan.

He studied Photography and Design in Bradford, UK and graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2003.

As a photojournalist, van Houdt has covered the NATO-led war in Afghanistan, illegal immigration from Africa into Europe and a resurgent Russia waking up to an oil boom.
In 2004 he was awarded the Canon talent award for photojournalist under 30 in the Netherlands.

His two-year project 'Entering Europe', documenting the life of an educated Moroccan before, during and after he illegally sneaks into Spain, was exhibited at Gemak in the Netherlands, Galleries in Belgium and published in Stern, Trouw, De Standaard, VSD and El Semanal.
The reportage won best picture at Germany's top media prize (Lead Academy) in 2011.

Alongside his decade-long work for Dutch newspapers and magazines van Houdt's work has appeared in various global publications including The Sunday Age, Der Spiegel, Stern, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times Magazine
